Ethical Artificial Intelligence: key tool to address social innovation’s global challenges by listening to citizens opinions and needs
You voted for thisThe use of data generated by an increasingly digitized society and technologies such as Big Data and Artificial Intelligence represent a new opportunity to address global challenges such as the design of more sustainable, inclusive and collaborative societies.
The proposed session will be a debate about the Ethical Artificial Intelligence as a key tool to address social innovation global challenges and build more collaborative, inclusive and equal societies by listening to citizens’ opinions. In fact, the participants will give different points of view and concrete examples on how Ethical AI enables to understand in real time the needs and opinions of citizens, and so it helps institutions and Public Administrations to drive not only informed and appropriate policies and decisions, but also those that include citizens’ voices.
The participants will also show a concrete and clear example of the effectiveness of Ethical Artificial Intelligence: the Observatory of Citizen Needs for Latin America, developed by IDB -Inter-American Development Bank- and the ethical AI plaform Citibeats: https://covid19-civiclytics.citibeats.com/#/ . It is a public citizen observatory of artificial intelligence to understand in real time the needs and concerns of Latin America and The Caribbean citizens. The categories of analysis include the impact of crisis measures, perceptions regarding food, economic, and health security, impact on mental health and situation of people in vulnerability (cases of domestic violence, immigrants), among others.
Knowing the needs and concerns of citizens contributes in the short term to improving decision-making processes and in the medium term finding consensus in the scenarios for exiting the crisis, both at the level of governments, start-ups, companies, civil society organizations and and citizens.

Ivan Caballero (moderator): Ivan Caballero, CEO and founder of Citibeats, is a tech serial entrepreneur with more than 20 years creating successful disruptive tech companies that promote people’s inclusion and empowerment with a high social impact. He also works as an advisor in projects where technology is applied to social engagement and social innovation.
In 2014 Caballero founded Social Coin, a social experiment to encourage and track acts of kindness among citizens. It soon became a global movement and an innovative technology to manage the Social Responsibility of Companies, Universities and Smart Cities. This project inspired people from all over the world and received public recognition from numerous institutions such as the United Nations, the World Summit Awards, the European Commission, the Institute for the Future and Gifted Citizen among others.
In 2018 Caballero created Citibeats as a result of the Social Coin experiment and more than a year of research and R&D. Citibeats is the Ethical Artificial Intelligence platform that helps institutions and organizations understand in real time the needs of citizens to drive and design policies more sensitive to social needs. Citibeats searches and analyzes through Artificial Intelligence large amounts of text from citizens and gives meaning to this data.
Born in Barcelona in February 2018, Citibeats works on projects in which it is essential to know the social trends for decision-making, basically in the public sector, infrastructure and the financial sector. To give concrete examples, Citibeats works with cases related to the identification of infrastructures damaged by natural disasters, the monitoring of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the detection of hate speech or the detection of barriers to disabled people in specific environments, among others. Citibeats’ activity is global and the company works on projects around the world, especially in Europe, Latin America and Japan.
